Residential Unit Design
Instructors: Nini Warszews | Roy Zlichowitz
In the course we had to pick a character and design her residence, I chose the character Billy Elliot.
14-year-old boy who struggles with his desire to escape the poor town he lives in and from all those close to him, to fulfill his dream, to dance. Contrary to the reality in which he hides and keeps his passion secret. We first designed a bedroom, work, and bathroom. All are 9 square meters. These spaces inspired us to continue the project and were the epitome of the character's program. In this exercise I used wood material to convey the warm and positive feeling that my character was looking for and at the same time I used concrete and iron materials out of his daily reality. A repetitive object is the ballet bar with which Billy can escape from any space whenever he wants.

The Unit
We settled in a building in the south of Tel Aviv, a place where many professionals work and create. The unit I chose is on the last floor next to the roof and stairwell. I designed it to be a special place for Billy to feel free, place to go crazy on a climbing wall with friends, use a punching bag at the entrance, to have a special dance studio and a ballet bar present and accessible in all spaces. I was inspired by the environment and used materials like iron mesh to the stair railing and various types of concrete. In the middle of the unit there is a special passage to the roof that only Billy can use to escape and dance or be alone. It was important to me to use the same concept, shapes and colors from my characters life and combine it with a design that suited her desires and feelings.
